The Most Contaminated Place on Earth: Chelyabinsk-40

We’re quite familiar with the lore of various secret United States nuclear facilities; their storied history and operations being shrouded in secrecy has fascinated us for decades. What we seldom hear about are the secret nuclear laboratories and test facilities of our greatest Cold War opponent – the former U.S.S.R. One particular installation – Chelyabinsk-40 – was the first Soviet plutonium production complex and the site of three separate massive nuclear incidents. Until recently this area was not on maps and the Russian government denied its existence. No visitors were allowed under any circumstances, and all residents worked in the facility (later referred to as Chelyabinsk-65).  With the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 90′s, Chelyabinsk-40 was finally publicly acknowledged by the Russian government and granted town status.  In 1994, Chelyabinsk-65 was finally given a name: Ozyorsk.

A special inspection of U.S. nuclear plants after the Fukushima disaster in Japan revealed problems with emergency equipment and disaster procedures that are far more pervasive than publicly described by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a review of inspection reports by ProPublica shows.

La idea de extender el cultivo de los agrocombustibles en el mundo y particularmente en los países del Sur es desastrosa. Ella forma parte de una perspectiva global de solución a la crisis energética. En los próximos 50 años tendremos que cambiar de ciclo energético, pasando de la energía fósil, que es cada vez más rara, a otras fuentes de energía. En el corto plazo es más fácil utilizar lo que es inmediatamente rentable, es decir los agrocombustibles. Esta solución, al reducirse las posibilidades de inversión y al esperar ganancias rápidas, parece la más requerida a medida que se desarrolla la crisis financiera y económica.

A queda pela metade da expansão da energia nuclear mundial depois do desastre de Fukushima, no Japão, aumentará o crescimento global das emissões de dióxido de carbono (CO2) em 30% até 2035, alertou na quarta-feira, 15 de junho, a Agência Internacional de Energia (AIE).

Em maio, a AIE advertiu que a meta política para limitar asmudanças climáticas a níveis mais seguros não foi alcançada, uma vez que as emissões globais aumentaram quase 6% em 2010 em relação ao ano interior.

Um aumento de radiação interrompeu a retirada de água radioativa na usina japonesa de Fukushima neste sábado, poucas horas após o processo ter sido iniciado, um novo revés nos esforços para restaurar a situação do complexo atingido pelo terremoto.
