BP’s troubled Texas City refinery as well as another refinery operated by Valero Energy Corporation have reportedly released more than 150,000 pounds of pollutants into the air after power troubles forced emergency shutdowns at several refineries in the area. Republicans unveiled a budget plan on Wednesday that proposed a $1.6 billion cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, an agency whose authority they have sought to curtail, while business trade groups have complained about the burden placed on them by agency regulations. Politico also reported that the GOP’s proposal would hit the Energy Department hard, with a proposal to cut energy efficiency and renewable energy programs in half. (mais…)

Transocean, the company from which BP leased the sunken Gulf oil rig, has refused to comply with a subpoena [1] from federal investigators, according to The Hill.

“We question the jurisdiction and authority of the CSB to conduct an investigation in this matter,” a lawyer for Stephen Bertone, Transocean’s chief engineer on the Deepwater Horizon, said in a letter to the U.S. Chemical Safety Board. Bertone’s lawyer argued that the safety board doesn’t have jurisdiction for accidents offshore. (mais…)
